ne of the best places to see primates in Africa is Uganda, which is home to several national parks and wildlife reserves. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is particularly well-known for its population of mountain gorillas, which are among the most endangered primates in the world. Of the estimated 1,063 mountain gorillas left in the world, Uganda is home to over 500.
Rwanda is another ideal location for primate trekking, blessed with over 13 different primate species and 10 habituated mountain gorilla populations. About 30% of all mountain gorillas left in the world live in Rwanda, with most of them residing in the Volcanoes National Park. This park attracts tens of thousands of tourists each year. The 13,500 square kilometers of untouched equatorial rainforest in the Democratic Republic of Congo is also a haven for one of Africa’s most diverse monkey populations. The Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo are particularly renowned for primate trekking.
During these treks, tourists are guided by an experienced ranger who leads them through the forest searching for the primates. The tour typically begins early in the morning, when these intelligent creatures are most active, and it can last for several hours. The ranger will use their knowledge of the primates’ habits and behavior to track them down and provide you with information about the animals and their environment as you go.
